Why You Should Eat More Berries This Year

Close your eyes and ask yourself: what is the healthiest food? Now, what do you picture? Kale? Avocados? Maybe some kind of special, little-known superfood, like tumeric? Well, it turns out you should be thinking of BERRIES!

berries

The biggest things about berries: they’re high in fiber, high in potassium, and high in cancer-preventing antioxidants.

So they are some of the most amazing superfoods. In fact, berries have the highest antioxidant levels of any fruits, and the only vegetables that have antioxidant levels as high are kale and spinach.

And to be honest, I’m sure you’d rather eat blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, or strawberries than kale or spinach…So let’s learn more about the benefits of these sweet, healthy treats!

Fiber

You already know that “fruit helps you poop” so I won’t go too in-depth on that part! 😉 But did you know there’s a deeper benefit of getting enough fiber in your diet as well? It’s such an important nutrient, because it’s is actually a good type of carb that can’t be broken down into simple sugars the way most carbs are. So, that means fiber is able to regulate your blood sugar, and even your hunger levels! As long as you have enough fiber in your body, you won’t be so hungry all the time, and your blood sugar will be stable! And that is super important to reducing your risk for heart disease and diabetes. So, fruit doesn’t just help you poop!!

Potassium

I’ve written a blog before on why potassium is so important! Your muscles need potassium, and low potassium can make your muscles weak, cause cramps, and even heart problems (because your heart is a muscle too).

But I also realize that it’s difficult for people to get enough potassium in their diet. I mean, people are supposed to be getting at least 3,000 mg a day…and the potassium level in a banana is just 422 mg. Most people don’t want to eat 7 bananas a day just to get enough potassium. So that’s where other high-potassium foods come in: from avocados to sweet potatoes to salmon to, yes, berries! A cup of berries can contain up to 200 mg of potassium.

Antioxidants

There are antioxidants in wine…😉

Berries are some of the only foods that are high in antioxidants called anthocyanins. This is because anthocyanins are found in foods that are colored blue, purple, or red. So there’s not a lot of foods that fall under that category, but berries definitely do!

The reason anthocyanins are so good is because they lower your risk of certain cancers, but they’ve also been proven to give you a better memory!

The other awesome antioxidant in berries is called ellagic acid. This also helps prevent many types of cancer, and even has antiviral and antibacterial abilities.

So if you don’t want to get sick, it’s time to DOWN those blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries!
